As a veteran himself, Matthews knows we need to help combat veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan to get the support they need to resume their lives by expanding veterans’ education housing, and medical services.

Keeping Gresham’s Neighborhoods Safe

In his time as a police officer, Matthews saw the worst side of meth addicts and gang members. Matthews wants to pass tougher penalties for gang activity and for scrap metal theft, which is commonly used by meth abusers to support their addiction.

Matthews has dedicated over twenty years to protecting his community. Greg’s experience has shown him what works best – putting more police officers on the streets and providing alternatives for young people to keep them from turning to crime in the first place. Public safety officers risk their lives everyday to protect our families, and need the legislature to ensure they have the resources they need to protect our families.

Making Health Care more Affordable

Shouldn’t every family in Gresham have affordable health insurance? Greg Matthews believes the answer is yes and he supports a health care plan based on our priorities. Greg wants greater scrutiny of out-of-control rate hikes and assurances that our health insurance premiums aren’t being wasted on overhead instead of medical care.

Reducing Government Waste

As a first responder, Greg understands how important it is that taxpayer dollars go where they’re supposed to, not to unnecessary bureaucracy. Greg supports aggressive audits of state agencies and increased citizen oversight to reduce government waste. That way, government agencies will work for us with lower costs, better service, and increased efficiency.

Enforce Tougher Penalties on Illegal Immigration

Matthews wants to penalize employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants and prevent companies that hire illegal immigrants from getting state funding.

Strengthening our Children’s Education

As the father of a second grader and two younger daughters who will also attend Gresham Public Schools, Greg is personally invested in the quality of Oregon’s education system. Schools must be funded for a full school year with smaller class sizes and well-trained teachers. Greg will work to build a world-class education system by reinvesting in K-12 education and funding a strong, statewide Head Start program.
